in Life?
Why It's So Important
The number of young people we can help is limited
by the number of Adult Supporters in the Group - this is because of the
need to ensure safety at all times. However,
we can only do this with more adult support.
Whilst the majority of people have been involved
with Scouts or Guides at some time in their lives, there are others who
can
only imagine the fun that we have and the value
of the work that we do. Many adults never realise how easy it is to join
in with
the fun of Scouting and just let the chance pass
them by.
The work we do with young people is extremely
worthwhile and important to the future of OUR community Adults within
Scouting not only gain the satisfaction that
comes from helping the young people of their community grow to take a constructive
role in society - they also have a great time!
The sociable side of working with a like minded
group of people is not to be under estimated and many ‘Scouters’ will tell
you
that joining Scouting as an adult was the best
thing they ever did.
We have a great time working together and enjoy
organizing and taking part in the various activities arranged for the
youngsters. Scouting provides many people with
opportunities to take part in exciting activities which they'd never otherwise
do, and meet people they'd never otherwise meet.
Where Can You Help?
There are four main training sections in Scouting,
and each of them holds a different kind of appeal for different people.
Some
adults prefer to work with the younger sections
whilst others prefer the challenge and satisfaction of working with young
adults
Beaver Scouts
Beaver Scouts are aged from 6 to 8 and their motto
is ‘Fun and Friends’. Activities include games and crafts, cooking and
days
out.
Helping with Beavers is ideal for the young at
heart.
Cub Scouts
Cub Scouts are aged from 8 to 10½ and take
part in a wider variety of activities, learn new skills and start to take
responsibility
for themselves.
Helping with Cub Scouts isn't just fun - its
addictive!
Scouts
The Scout Section is the traditional heart of
the Scout Movement and is where young people aged 11 to 15½ are
introduced to
a number of adventurous activities and start
to plan their own programme.
This is where adult support really makes a difference.
Venture Scouts
The Venture Scout Unit takes responsibility for
its own organization and programme planning, guided by adult leaders.
In many ways, its a case of leading from behind.
What Can You Do?
The time you give and the commitment you make
is up to you. There are many ways you can help, all adult members of the
Group enjoy a good social life and the rewards
increase along with the commitment you make.
Warranted Leaders
Warranted Leaders are the backbone of Scouting,
helping to plan and run the weekly meetings - they also have the most fun!
Each section has a Leader and one or more Assistant
Leaders who help to share the responsibility for the planning, organization
and running of the weekly meetings and other
activities. Full training is provided and no previous experience or knowledge
of
Scouting is required. It's great fun being in
the thick of all the exciting and adventurous activities and well worth
the effort of
joining.
Helpers
Although not undertaking the formal training required
of warranted leaders, helpers also attend weekly meetings and help out
with running events and activities. This is ideal
for those who are committed to the ideals of Scouting but who simply don't
have
the time to take formal training.
Instructors
Skills Instructors attend occasional meetings,
specifically to pass on particular skills such as fire lighting, pioneering,
swimming,
rock climbing and so on. If you have a particular
skill or knowledge this might be the role for you
The Group Executive
For those not wishing to work directly with young
people, a role on the Group Executive may be just right. Helping with the
administration of the Group and the organization
of events is a vital role in every Scout Group
All parents in the Group and all supporters are
members of the Group Scout Council and are eligible to join the Group
Executive. However, it's not all boring meetings
since members get actively involved in fund-raising activities, helping
to maintain
the Group equipment, look after the Group minibus
and so on.
Why It's So Important
Its Important To You
Its important that you join Scouting as an adult
because you deserve a chance to unwind. You deserve a chance to get away
from the pressure of work and a break from the
everyday grind. Its important that you have something to occupy your free
time, something that will get you out of the
house and meeting new people.
Its important that you have the opportunity to
try new activities, socialise with others in the community and have FUN.
Its Important To Others
And most of all its important for the young people.
Every extra adult helping means that we can provide an exciting and
adventurous programme for even more of the young
people of our community.
Its important that they have the chance to grow
and develop, guided by trained leaders and supported by a committed group
of adults.
So whatever else you do today, consider how you
can help yourself, consider how you can help others and consider how you
can help provide a better future for all our
young people.
